Fiat engines: What you should know about Fiat engines

Fiat is one of the oldest automobile brands in the world and has been on the market since 1899. In addition to passenger cars, the Italian car manufacturer also produces light commercial vehicles, which are offered under the commercial vehicle division Fiat Professional.

All important information about Fiat engines

Many Fiat engines are developed by the Group’s own partner Fiat Powertrain Technologies. In addition to diesel engines and petrol engines, Fiat models are increasingly available with hybrid drives or electric motors.

Fiat petrol engines

  • Fiat FIRE engine: Fiat engines with the FIRE designation were developed as in-line four-cylinder petrol engines with a grey cast iron block and a cylinder head made of light alloy. The abbreviation of the engine series stands for Fully Integrated Robotised Engine. Fiat FIRE units can be found with different displacements in models such as the Fiat Tipo, the Fiat 124 Spider or the older Fiat 500 X.
  • Fiat Turbo-Jet engine: The Fiat Turbojet engine series represents a further development of the FIRE engine. For this purpose, the Fiat engines were equipped with a turbocharger and specially adapted. The Turbojet units can be found in different variants as a sporty or more moderate engine in the Fiat Grande Punto, in the Fiat Bravo or also in Fiat commercial vehicles such as the Doblo.
  • Fiat GSE engine: Fiat GSE engines are modern petrol engines with three or four cylinders in a row arrangement. The abbreviation GSE stands for Global Small Engine. The Fiat GSE engines are produced in different variants with and without turbocharger, and can be found in the Fiat 500X and Fiat Panda models, among others.
  • Fiat Twin-Air engine: In the course of downsizing, Fiat introduced the Twin-Air engine. These Fiat engines with only two cylinders promise high efficiency with reduced fuel consumption. The Twin-Air engine can be found in various versions with and without turbo, for example in the Fiat 500 and 500L, as well as in the Fiat Punto and Fiat Panda.

Fiat Diesel Engines

  • Fiat Multi-Jet engine: Diesel engines with the Multijet designation represent the standard for Fiat models with diesel drive. The modern engines with common rail injection and turbocharging are produced in various versions. Multi-Jet diesels can be found in the Fiat Grande Punto, the Fiat Doblo and in commercial vehicles such as the Fiat Ducato.

Fiat electric motors and hybrid drives

  • Fiat Hybrid GSE Engine: Under the designation GSE Hybrid, Fiat installs engines in mild hybrid technology. Here, a small electric drive assists the GSE combustion engine to enable fuel savings. The energy for the electric assistance is generated during braking. The GSE hybrid drives can be found in the Fiat 500X Hybrid or the Fiat Tipo Hybrid.
  • Fiat electric motor: Fiat is increasingly focusing on electric drive. For example, the Fiat 500 model uses purely electric drives as permanently excited three-phase synchronous machines. Depending on the model variant, drives with 70 kW or 87 kW are available.

10 modern drive concepts with Fiat engines

  1. Hybrid 1.5 GSE – Hybrid drive with 1.5 litre 4 cylinder in-line engine and electric assistance. The hybrid system has a maximum output of 96kW (130PS) and can be found in the Fiat 500X or also in the Fiat Tipo Hybrid with 7-speed direct shift gearbox.
  2. 1.0 Hybrid GSE N3 – The hybrid system with 1.0 litre in-line petrol engine has 3 cylinders and an electric assist. The power output is 51 kW (70 hp) with a maximum torque of 92 Nm. With a manual 6-speed gearbox, the system is found in the Fiat 500 Hybrid.
  3. 1.4 Turbojet – Fiat engine as in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharger. The Turbo-Jet engine with 1.4 litres displacement has an output of 88 kW (120 hp) and 206 Nm torque. It is found, for example, in the Fiat Doblo, where it is coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
  4. 1.3 16V Multijet Start&Stop – Four-cylinder in-line diesel with turbocharging and common rail injection. The diesel engine with 1.3 litres displacement and start-stop technology produces 70 kW (95 PS) at a maximum of 200 Nm. In the Fiat 500L, it can be found with a 5-speed Dualogic transmission.
  5. 0.9 TwinAir – Two-cylinder in-line petrol engine with turbo based on the TwinAir concept. The Fiat engine with 0.9 litre displacement produces 77 kW (105 PS) at 145 Nm. The engine can be found in the Fiat 500 TwinAir.
  6. 1.0 6V Mild-Hybrid – Modern hybrid drive with 3-cylinder petrol engine and electric assistance. The 1.0 litre engine delivers a system output of 51 kW (70 hp), which is transmitted to a 6-speed manual gearbox in the Fiat Panda.
  7. 1.3 16V Multijet – Fiat diesel engine as in-line engine with four cylinders and turbocharger. The unit with common rail injection and 1.3 litre displacement produces 70 kW (95 hp) at a maximum of 200 Nm. With a manual 5-speed gearbox, it can also be found in the Fiat Panda as an all-wheel drive concept.
  8. 1.4 16V T-Jet – In-line four-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharger as a 16-valve engine. The Fiat engine with 1.4 litres displacement and 88 kW (120 hp) engine output at 215 Nm is found with a 6-speed manual gearbox in the Fiat Tipo model.
  9. Fiat 500e 70 kW – Electric motor with 70 kW (95 hp) of power and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. The electric motor is installed in the electric Fiat 500 with an automatic reduction gearbox.
  10. 180 Multijet 2 – Fiat Multi-Jet four-cylinder diesel engine with 2.2 litre displacement, exhaust gas cleaning and variable VTG turbocharger. The Multijet 2 Fiat engines are used in models such as the Ducato and produce 130 kW (178 hp) at 400 Nm.

Buy the right original Fiat engine used

If Fiat engines are defective due to high mileage, a replacement engine from the car recycling service is a good option thanks to the favourable price.
