VW engines: What you need to know about Volkswagen engines
The German automobile company Volkswagen is one of the largest and best-known car manufacturers in the world. The vehicles with the VW brand abbreviation are marketed in numerous countries around the world. The VW engines used are mostly the company’s own developments, which are also used in the same form by the group’s subsidiaries Audi, Skoda or Seat.
Volkswagen engines and car parts are considered to be resilient and sophisticated. However, some specific VW engines sometimes have a problem with elongated timing chains, while others show increased oil consumption. According to information from the Volkswagen Group, more VW vehicles with alternative drive concepts will be manufactured in the future.
Volkswagen engine overview – VW engines simply explained
Volkswagen develops and produces various engines as petrol and diesel, which have specific designations depending on the model. The VW Group is also active in the field of alternative drive systems. Here, for example, natural gas is used as a fuel. In addition to engines for conventional fuels, VW is increasingly focusing on hybrid concepts and electric drives. When Volkswagen engines are developed further, VW often adds the term Evo to the type designation.
Volkswagen petrol engines and diesel
- VW TSI engine: Volkswagen engines with the designation TSI are petrol engines with turbocharging that are installed in various VW models. Such an engine, with the abbreviation for Turbocharged Stratified Injection, has one or two turbochargers depending on the model. With its direct injection and reduced displacement, the VW TSI engine is considered low-emission and consumes less fuel. This type of engine is used in many VW models such as the VW Golf, the VW Passat, or also in the Tiguan and Sharan.
- VW VR6 engine: A VW engine with the VR6 designation always has six cylinders in a special cylinder arrangement. This makes it possible to equip even a smaller vehicle with a transversely mounted six-cylinder petrol engine. The VW VR6 engine has two cylinder banks that share a common cylinder head. The VR6 engine can be found with automatic or manual transmission in cars such as the VW Golf, the VW Vento or also in the Volkswagen Touareg.
- VW TDI engine: VW markets diesel engines with turbocharging under the designation TDI. TDI is the abbreviation for Turbocharged Diesel Injection or Turbocharged Direct Injection. The diesel direct injection engines have been used in different variants since the 1990s. Whereas this type of engine was initially equipped with distributor injection pumps or pump-injector technology, the later engines all feature modern common-rail technology. VW TDI engines are found in many Volkswagen cars such as the Passat saloon, the VW Arteon or also the VW Touran.
Volkswagen hybrid concepts
.
- eTSI engine: Volkswagen models with the addition eTSI have an engine with mild hybrid concept. This combines VW engines with TSI technology and a 48-volt electric system. During braking, energy is recovered by means of recuperation and temporarily stored in a lithium-ion battery. This electrical energy is available as drive energy via the generator when needed.
- Volkswagen GTE: VW models with the GTE designation have a hybrid engine with charging option. For the modern plug-in hybrid technology, VW combines a TSI engine with an electric motor. If required, both engines accelerate the vehicle together, and depending on the selected drive mode, pure electric driving is also possible. If required, VW GTE cars can be charged at a charging station or a wallbox. The technology is used in the Volkswagen Golf GTE or Passat GTE.
VW engine as natural gas drive
- TGI engine: If a VW vehicle bears the suffix TGI, it has a low-emission natural gas drive. The basis is usually formed by VW engines as petrol engines, which have turbocharging with variable turbine geometry. The Volkswagen engine for natural gas can be found in vehicles such as the VW Caddy TGI, the Passat TGI, the Golf TGI or the VW Polo TGI.
10 advanced VW engines
.
VW 1.0 MPI: VW engine with 1.0 litre displacement and 65 hp output. The naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine is offered as the base engine in the VW up! with manual 5-speed transmission.
- VW 1.0 TGI: Natural gas engine with three cylinders and a displacement of 1.0 litres. The three-cylinder in-line engine with 90 hp is installed in the VW Polo with a 6-speed gearbox.
- VW 2.0 TSI: Turbo petrol engine with four cylinders in line and 207 hp output. The TSI engine with 2.0 litres displacement is the standard engine of the VW Polo GTI performance model.
- VW 1.5 eTSI: Mild hybrid engine with 1.5 litre petrol engine and electric assistance. The modern hybrid concept with 150 hp system output is installed in the VW Golf Variant.
- VW 2.0 TDI 4MOTION: Turbodiesel as a four-cylinder in-line engine with 2.0 litres displacement. This VW engine can be found with 200 hp power and all-wheel drive transmission in the VW Golf Alltrack.
- VW 1.4 eHybrid: Plug-in hybrid GTE engine with a maximum system output of 245 hp. Four-cylinder 1.4 litre in-line engine with turbo in combination with electric drive in the VW Golf GTE.
- VW 1.5 TGI: VW engine for natural gas operation with 1.5 litre displacement. Four-cylinder in-line engine with 130 hp output found in the Volkswagen Golf TGI with 7-speed DSG.
- VW 2.0 TSI 4MOTION: VW TSI engine with 2.0 litres displacement and an output of 280 hp. The turbo petrol engine is offered with 7-speed DSG and all-wheel drive in the VW Arteon Sedan.
- VW 2.0 TSI GTI: Four-cylinder petrol engine as 2.0 litre in-line engine with turbocharging. This engine with 245 hp output is installed in the VW Golf GTI with manual transmission or 7-speed DSG.
- VW 1.5 TSI: Modern VW TSI four-cylinder engine with 1.5 litres displacement. The petrol engine with turbo and 150 hp output is used in the Volkswagen mini-SUV T-Cross.
