Citroën engines: What you should know about Citroen engines

Citroën is one of the best-known French manufacturers in the automotive sector. The company, which was founded as early as 1919, belonged to the PSA Group for a long time along with other brands until the latter merged to form the Stellantis automotive group.

It is therefore hardly surprising that Citroën, in addition to its own engines, also uses tried and tested engines from other manufacturers within the group. Engines are also developed jointly, for example with the manufacturer Peugeot.

Important information about each Citroen engine

Citroën uses a wide variety of engines and drive concepts in its models. After the manufacturer had long relied on pure diesel and petrol engines, hybrid concepts and electric drives are increasingly being used. Citroën offers electric motors not only for cars, but also for vans.

Citroën petrol engines

  • Citroën PureTech engine: Citroën engines with the designation PureTech are modern petrol in-line engines with turbocharger and direct injection. During the development of the engines, the main focus was on optimising consumption and efficiency. After the engines were first installed in the Peugeot 308 in 2017, they can also be found in numerous Citroën vehicles in various versions. These include the Citroen C3, Citroen C4, Citroën C5 Aircross and Citroën C5 X models.
  • PSA-TU engine: PSA-TU engines were developed within the PSA Group and can be found in various Peugeot and Citroën models. The engines were installed with different engine outputs ranging from 40 to 125 hp and different displacements. At Citroën, the TU engine was used in the Citroën AX, the Citroën Saxo or the Citroën Berlingo, among others.

Citroën diesel engines

  • Citroën BlueHDi engine: Citroën engines with the designation HDi are diesel engines with direct injection in common rail technology and turbocharging. The abbreviation HDi stands for High Pressure Direct Injection. Citroën BlueHDi engines have an effective exhaust gas aftertreatment system that helps to significantly reduce pollutant emissions.

Citroën engines as electric motor and hybrid drive

  • As a progressive manufacturer, Citroën is also increasingly focusing on electric drives as engines of the future. The Citroën electric motor 136 with 100 kW (136 hp) maximum output is ideal for use in cars or vans. It is installed in many electric Citroëns such as the Citroën ë-C4, the Citroën Berlingo electric model or in the Citroën Spacetourer electric minibus.
  • To save fuel and reduce the burden on the environment, Citroën also offers modern hybrid drive systems for various models. These include the Hybrid 225 plug-in system, which is installed in the Citroën C5 Aircross Plug-in Hybrid and the Citroën C5 X Plug-in Hybrid. Depending on the requirements, the system can drive purely electrically or in hybrid mode.

10 modern Citroën drive concepts

  1. PureTech 83 Stop&Start – Citroën in-line petrol engine with three cylinders and 1.2 litres displacement. The modern engine with start-stop system produces 61 kW (83 hp) with a maximum torque of 118 Nm. The engine with manual transmission is installed in the Citroen C3, among others.
  2. PureTech 110 Stop&Start – petrol engine with three cylinders in line as direct injection. The Citroen engine with 1.2 litres displacement produces 81 kW (110 hp) with a maximum torque of 205 Nm. The engine is installed in the Citroën C3 Aircross with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
  3. PureTech 130 Stop&Start EAT8 – Citroen engine with three cylinders in line and turbocharger. The PureTech petrol engine produces 96 kW (131 hp) with 230 Nm of torque. Together with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the 1.2 litre turbo engine provides propulsion in the Citroën C4.
  4. PureTech 100 Stop&Start – In-line petrol engine with turbocharging and 1.2 litre displacement. The modern Citroen engine delivers 74 kW (101 hp) of power and 205 Nm of torque. Coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission, the PureTech engine is used in the C4 model.
  5. BlueHDi 130 Stop&Start – In-line four-cylinder diesel engine with 1.5 litre displacement and turbocharger. The Citroen engine produces 96 kW (131 hp) and 300 Nm of torque. The BlueHDi 130 is fitted in the Citroën C5 Aircross with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
  6. PureTech 180 Stop&Start – Citroen engine as in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with turbo and direct injection. The engine with 1.6 litres displacement develops an output of 133 kW (181 hp) with 300 Nm torque. This type is installed in the Citroën C5 X with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
  7. BlueHDi 180 Stop&Start – Citroën BlueHDi diesel with 2.0 litre displacement as a four-cylinder in-line engine. This type of Citroën engine with 130 kW (177 hp) engine output and 400 Nm torque is installed in the Citroën C5 Aircross with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
  8. BlueHDi 100 Stop&Start – Citroën in-line four-cylinder diesel engine with 1.5 litre displacement. The modern Citroën engines with turbo and common rail injection produce 75 kW (102 hp) at 250 Nm torque. They are used with a 6-speed transmission in the Citroën Berlingo.
  9. Hybrid 225 ë-EAT8 – Hybrid concept with 4-cylinder 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine and electric motor. The hybrid drive achieves a system output of 165 kW (224 hp) and a maximum system torque of 360 Nm, and is installed in the C5 Aircross with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
  10. Electric motor 136 – The Citroën electric motor 136 is a modern automatic electric drive which is used, for example, in the Citroën ë-C4. Here, the Citroën electric motor with fixed gear ratio produces 100 kW (136 hp) at 260 Nm via a 1-step reduction gearbox.
